Antigen: Any substance which can bind to
an antibody raised against it.
Antiserum: The serum, or non-cellular
components of blood which remain after
clotting, which results from the injection of
antigens and contains the antibodies
produced in response to those antigens.
Ascitic Fluid (also called ascites): An
intraperitoneal fluid extracted from animals
that have developed a peritoneal tumor.
Avidity: The strength of the bond between
an antigen and antibody. Avidity depends
on the affinity as well as the valences of the
antigen and antibody.
Clone: Genetically identical cells derived
from the same cell.
Monoclonal: derived from the same
clone and therefore all genetically
identical.
Polyclonal: derived from different
clones.
Complement: A set of plasma proteins that
act together to attack extracellular forms of
pathogens. Complement can be activated
spontaneously on certain pathogens, or by
antibody binding to the pathogen.
ELISA (Enzyme Linked Immunosorbent
Assay): Immunological analysis using
antigens or antibodies marked by an
enzyme.
