Queen Elizabeth National Park SafarisPosted by Bowden Werner on March 13th, 2021 Queen Elizabeth National Park Safaris Queen Elizabeth is the top tourist destination in Uganda for wildlife tours, chimpanzee tracking and bird watching. This park is located in the floor of the great rift valley, between lakes Edward and George and it has an area of 1,978 square kilometers. Established in 1954, this park is named after Queen Elizabeth 2. It has a wide variety of bushy grassland, forest, acacia woodland and lake shore vegetation. Due to the impressive range of habitats, this park is home to 95 mammal species and 612 bird species. It has the highest bio-diversity ranking in the whole world. It has the greatest number of mammals in the whole of Uganda. Some of the animals found in the grassland include the elephant, buffalo, Uganda knob, water buck, warthog, lion, leopard, hyena and the giant forest hog. The common bird species seen in this area include the lesser and greater flamingo, African skimmer, pink-backed pelicans, shoe bill stork, white-winged warbler and papyrus canary. The primates such as chimpanzees, red-tailed monkey and black and white colobus are found in the forests of Kyambura Gorge and Maramagambo. The Kazinga Channel, which is 40 kilometers long connects lakes Edward and George. Along this channel, you will have a chance to see many hippos, buffalo and the elephant. You will see birds such as fish eagles, king fisher and the pelican. You will also see the famous tree-climbing lions near Ishasha. Many people suggest that the lions climb on the fig trees to enjoy the cool breeze and run away from the Tse-Tse flies. Katwe salt lake is the oldest salt mine industry which was started in the 14th century. Today, salt is still mined from this lake using traditional methods. Game drives are done early in the morning and late in the evening. The best time to visit Queen Elizabeth National park is during the dry months of January to February when many animals remain near the waters. This park lies at an altitude of 900m at lake Edward and 1845m at the top of the Escarpment on the Western rift. The main activities in this park are game viewing, chimpanzee tracking, bird watching, boat rides and nature walks.
