Secrets of successful child models

As a counselor for an agency dealing in child models or young models I meet hoards of anxious parents of talented kids or young people who wish to see themselves as the leading models. Almost all of them are exceptionally talented but not always aware of the demands and requirements of the industry and therefore miss the train in most instances. Here, I thought of sharing my experience and tips with them so that they find themselves completely prepared for the job, both physically and emotionally.

Though it looks extremely glamorous and full of promises the world of modeling is the right balance of talent and sheer hard work. The work pressure is quite demanding with tight schedules, intense training and patience. My first advice for the parents of aspiring child models or the young models would be to know the industry better before jumping on the bandwagon. There are newspaper articles and magazines that can provide you the basic info. Still better, search for online portals that work as a bridge between aspiring models and agencies looking for fresh new faces. These sites not only let you upload your kid’s profile but also provide you relevant information and tips that you would find to be extremely helpful.

Have you prepared a portfolio? This is the first requirement to succeed as a child model or a young model. There are professional photographers that can present you the dream portfolio, which certainly keeps you ahead of your peers. If you are uploading your portfolio in some web portal, inform your photographer beforehand. The requirement may vary if you wish to upload them online instead of meeting agents physically. Child models and young models should have head-only and full-body photos ready before they contact the agencies or the web portal. The pictures should reflect your true self; so don’t indulge on a funny hat or fancy feathers around. The website (and also the conventional agency) will need important details like your child's name, age, hair and eye color, clothing size, etc. Check the portal carefully and don’t leave any field incomplete.

My second piece of advice would be to check carefully for a shady business. Both in case of online and conventional agency, go through their reputation, success rate and terms and conditions before providing your details. Avoid the ones that ask for money up front. Reputable websites/agencies don't ask for fees until the young models or child models have already worked.

Aspiring child models (their parents, of course) and young models should also be aware of rates offered to be realistic and well informed. For catalogue and other print ads the rate is moderate, however, TV commercials or shows fetch better rates than this. Again, editorial work for magazines is less lucrative. You will find the most prominent agencies pay the least and in this case an online agency proves to be more transparent that their physical counterpart. They have clear terms and conditions spelt in black-and-white without any hidden costs or dangers. My advice would be search online diligently and find one agency that makes realistic promises and puts their effort to realize your dream.

For the best pool of young models and child models search the online portals.
