Laminar Air Flow Cabinets and Their Classifications

Laminar Air Flow cabinets are devices created for giving out cleaner air that is free from all kinds of microorganisms and other particles. There is not just one type of laminar flow cabinet. If you were looking for the different types of these devices, then you have come to the right place. In this article, we will be discussing different types of laminar flow cabinets available in the market.

Types of Laminar Flow Cabinets

There are two types of Laminar Flow Cabinets. They are classified based on their directional air flow characteristics. They are:

  • Vertical Laminar Air flow Cabinets
  • Horizontal Laminar Air flow Cabinets

Vertical Laminar Air flow Cabinets

The vertical laminar air flow cabinet contains a vertical displacement air flow unit and is perfect for small rooms or even for household purposes. These laminar Air flow hoods follow the mechanism of the gravitational effect that they exert on particulate matter. These particles get swept out either through small holes built into the device or through the access area built in front.

These cabinets are an ideal choice for laboratories that are smaller in size. The filters of this device are installed on the wall-ceiling that allows the laminar hood to be installed on the workbench. These cabinets also have some disadvantages. If anyone places his hands or some objects on the top of other items, it obstructs the smooth Air flow that reduced the device’s ability to filter out particulate matter.

As the filters in this device are installed on the wall ceilings, it might pose a safety threat when it comes to changing the filters of the cabinet. Keeping all things aside, Vertical Laminar Air flow Cabinets are best for rooms that are smaller in size and like all other laminar flow cabinets, they are economical and give out a clear air.

Horizontal Laminar Air flow Cabinets

Horizontal Laminar Air flow Cabinets are the second type of laminar Air flow hoods that are used in laboratories. They direct the Air flow from an air source and spread out in the laboratory giving out clean air free from particulate matter. Unlike Vertical Air flow Cabinets, these cabinets are designed to give clean air but might not protect you.

You are left prone to contaminants that are not filtered out by the laminar air flow hood. Hence, these laminar Air flow cabinets can be used only in places with a hazard level of 2 or 3 materials. Since the air flows horizontally, large particles might disrupt the Air flow. The filters in the device are placed at the back of the hood and this is the reason it requires more storage space.
