Driveway Pavers: Paver Sealant: To Seal or Not to Seal

When you apply a paver sealant on your driveway pavers, therefore, you can be sure that the driveway will have the same stunning look for the longest time. However, as “too much of anything is not good,” there are also some crucial considerations that one has to make when deciding to seal their pavers. The factors will also help one to answer the question; “To seal or not to seal pavers?”

If you are in that fix, too, you are not alone. You can use the following questions, though, to help you decide.

  1. Can all pavers be sealed?

If you are concerned about whether you can seal all pavers, the answer is yes. Probably you are concerned about sealing concrete pavers, for example. Since concrete is porous, it might absorb and develop stains, something that you can prevent using a sealant. Also, the sealant will help to protect your paver color from fading.

  1. Is there a sealant more protective than the others are?

There are two paver sealant types, that is film-forming sealant (gloss or semi-gloss finish) and non-film-forming sealant (matte finish). With film-forming sealants, you get ultimate protection since they tend to create physical barriers on the pavers’ surfaces. On their side, non-film-forming sealants offer excellent protection, too, and they last a bit longer.

  1. How long do pavers cure before sealing them?

Before you seal pavers for the first time, you need to give them enough curing period. In the case of a non-film-forming paver sealant, you might want to wait for up to one week. If you are using a film-forming sealant, then you can wait for as long as 30 days. This is to avoid trappingany moisture.

  1. How long do you wait for pavers to dry after cleaning and prepping?

In this case, the climate is the determinant. If you are in a warm and sunny climate, for example, the pavers will have dried up and be ready to seal within a few hours. If you have cooler climates, then the drying period may take about 24 hours.

  1. How often should I re-apply the sealer?

To re-apply a paver sealer, wait for about 3-5 years. Film-forming sealants will show some physical barriers as a sign of wearing. Color changes will manifest in the case of non-film-forming sealants, all of which necessitate re-application.
