How to wear a cloth face mask: Dos and Don'ts

Experts agree that wearing a face mask can protect people’s health and slow the spread of germs and viruses. Covid-19 can be transmitted through respiratory droplets that get into the air from sneezing, speaking, and even coughing, a mask acts as a barrier and stops the droplets from coming into contact with another person and spreading the disease. But a face mask in Malaysia is only effective if it is worn properly, here are the dos and don’ts of wearing a 3ply face mask.

Dos

  • Do wear your face shield or cloth mask when you go out in public

  • Ensure your mask has multiple layers of tightly-woven fabric that you can breathe through easily

  • See that your mask fits snugly against your face and covers your nose and mouth with no gaps as even a tiny gap in your face mask in Malaysia can let in particles.

  • Make sure you wash your hands before you put on your mask, every time you touch it, and when you remove it.

  • Do know the proper way of putting on and removing your face mask – While putting it on, grasp the mask and pinch it at the ear loops or the upper ties, secure the ear loops behind the ear, or for back style masks secure the upper ties behind your head first. Then slowly secure the lower ties behind your head and always put the same reused side against your face, not the other side.

  • When removing your mask carefully lift it without touching the outside of your eyes, nose, and mouth and remove ear loops or ties carefully ensuring that it doesn’t touch the side of the mask or face shield going against your face. If you plan to reuse the mask then place it in a bag until you can launder it.

  • Always continue to practice good social distancing by staying at home, avoiding contact with other people, especially if you live with an aged relative or someone who is immunocompromised.

  • Wash your cloth mask after each use with regular detergent and warm water and dry well.

Don’t

  • Never put a mask on a young child under the age of 2 years or anyone who is incapacitated, has trouble breathing, or anyone who can’t remove the mask without assistance.

  • Don’t use medical-grade masks or 3 ply face masks as they are only reserved for health workers and other medical responders as per the government

  • If you need to eat and drink don’t push your mask down to your chin, carefully remove it and put it once you’ve finished eating.

  • Always wear a clean mask and never one that is soiled, torn, damaged, or saturated.

  • Don’t neglect to continue taking other preventive measures including staying 6 feet away from others. Maintain hygiene at home, washing your hands, and more. And, never go out if you feel sick, have a fever, cough, or even feel weak.

In Conclusion

When you wear a mask, you are making an effort to protect yourself and the health of others. A face shield which most people wear is used mainly for eye protection and experts aren’t sure of the level of protection a face shield provides from the spray of respiratory droplets from the wearer. Keep yourself and your family safe by taking all necessary precautions and ensuring that your loved ones are safe from the virus, keep washing your hands, staying at home, and wear a clean mask or a face shield if you need to go anywhere along with necessary precautions when meeting other people.
