This year when scheduling your holiday accommodations through OWNERS DIRECT in the vibrant city of Barcelona spare a little time to visit one of the cities sacred gems that is not in all the guide books, Sant Pau del Camp. This little church is both beautiful and simple when you take into consideration all the other churches in Barcelona. You can't compare it with the other famous buildings in Barcelona especially the ones designed by the modernist architect Antonio Gaudi. To see this simplistic church head over to the old quarters of El Raval for a real treat.Sant Pau del Camp, or as it translates into English “Saint Paul of the countryside”, is the oldest church in Barcelona.

Today the monastery stands in the El Raval district but before the 14th century it was located outside the city hence its rural location gave it its name. There are no records confirming the monastery's date of origin but historians believe that it was founded sometime in the latter part of the ninth century. Documentation of the monastery dates it from 977; it also tells us that the Muslim troops of al-Mansur Ibn Abi Aamir attempted to destroy it in 985 after which the monks abandoned the monastery. In 1096 restorations started on the monastery at which time a new monastic community arrived. The turbulent history of Sant Pau del Camp reared its ugly head once more when in 1114 the monastery was again attacked. The persistent monks once again restored the monastery three years later which at this time it became a priory of the monastery. Due to its turbulent history and age it was declared a National Monument in 1879.When you are in Old Town all you have to do is look around to see the cities turbulent history starting at the old boundary walls of Sant Madrona which you will find on Parallel Avenue. As you stroll through this ancient part of the city take note of the Gothic architecture and all that is visible within.Once you are in the city visit Las Ramblas street, which was once a dry river bed but today it is in the busiest part of the city with a lot of attractions. Just off Las Ramblas is the modernist architect Antonio Gaudi’s Palau Guell situated on Nou de la Rambla.

Also in the Raval area is the Modern art museum that is well worth a visit while you are in the area visiting the San Pau del Camp church. So if its historic or modernist architecture you are interested in when staying in your OWNERS DIRECT accommodations stop by the tourist information centre for a pamphlet on Barcelona. This way you will not miss anything of interest. When you do go out exploring notice how comfortably the old and new buildings sit next to each other, just like it was designed this way.
