3 Tips for a Hurricane-Proof Home

Posted by Jalal Official on March 18th, 2021

Living in Florida has so many advantages. The sea, the climate, the natural wonders, the great amenities. So many airports and lovely long straight, flat roads.

However …

One of the downsides is most definitely the hurricane problem. Each year 100s of 1000s of home owners cross their fingers and grit their teeth as yet another big storm approaches.

It seems like pot luck, who will get hit, who will be spared?

But of course, we make our own luck (mostly) and one way of putting lady luck on our side is to make sure that our homes are secure. Also, we need to make sure that our families are safe.

First things first

The first and foremost step in preparing yourself for hurricane season is to determine your area's exposure risk. If you live in a state that rarely gets hit by a storm, you probably have nothing to worry about. If your place of residence is in Texas, Florida, Mississippi, or another area with frequent hurricanes, this article is for you.

Tip # 1: Be Ready for an Evacuation.

After you have analyzed the storm's course and its impact on your locality, you should start thinking of an evacuation plan. This will reduce the stress you are bound to experience when the hurricane reaches your area. Be sure to assess and prepare various escape routes in case of unexpected road blockages.

Call ahead in the designated shelter facilities and talk to them about the possibilities of accommodating your entire family if there need be. Keep your car tank full and put away extra cash, so you do not need to depend on your bank cards. Always keep your family members posted about your circumstances and plan an alternative communication method if the conventional means fail.

Tip # 2: Safeguard Your Home from the Elements.

Installing storm shutters on the most vulnerable areas of your house is your best bet for hurricane protection. The price may seem hefty at first, but in the long run, the investment will not only save you money. Still, it will decrease your headaches from dealing with your insurance company and various potential repairs and losses.

Do not leave this task for the very last minute, as most people would. Reputable companies may be booked for weeks or months ahead before hurricane season strikes, so jump on that train as soon as your wallet allows. Taping your windows may do the trick for a minor storm but cannot stop a hurricane.

Tip # 3: Keep an Emergency Kit on Hand.

If you have tried overnight camping, building your hurricane emergency kit will not be a difficult task to accomplish. If you are brand new to this, though, you should be cautious not to miss some of the most vital elements of the kit:

  • A standard first aid kit, including any particular medication you or another family member requires.

  • Enough non-perishable food and water to last you for at least three days (the suggested amount of H2O is one gallon per person per day).

  • Your paperwork, including passports, birth certificates, and other valuable documents.

  • A flashlight and radio, as well as multiple spare batteries.

If you are not comfortable preparing an emergency hurricane kit, you can always purchase a pre-made one. Check with your reputable local organizations, like the American Red Cross. Do not buy any unverified online kits, as you do not want to take the risk when an emergency occurs.

Bonus Tip: Inspect your roof and ensure it is in impeccable working order before hurricane season approaches. Clean your gutters preventatively and invest in a large number of sandbags.

Wrap

From the lack of state income tax, low house prices (in general) to the sunny, sunny weather, there are lots of reasons to call Florida your home state.

The population is as diverse as the food, there are many theme parks and attractions. This makes Florida a unique and wonderful place to live. It is home to some great cities and Miami is also a world class beach resort

Make sure that you and yours is all safe in the hurricane season and you can relax in the wonderful Sunshine State. Florida is a great place to be.
