4 Dental Fads You Should Avoid Doing

Posted by Riverside Dental Clinic on March 18th, 2021

There is no shortage of dental fads out there. And when everyone else is doing it, fear of missing out strikes. You might feel like you should try it, too, and see for yourself if it’s going to work for you. What could go wrong, right? After all, they have been endorsed by your favorite celebrities, right?

But be wary of doing dental fads. Celebrities are not professional dentists. They should not be your number one source of information when it comes to taking care of your teeth.

The following are some of the dental fads today that you should avoid doing without clear knowledge about them and without consulting your Dentist in Kamloops first:

1. Using charcoal for teeth whitening.

Activated charcoal has been gaining attention these days supposedly because of its whitening benefits. It’s not clear whether it can really get rid of the stains on the surface of the teeth. But one thing is certain – charcoal can be toxic to the body when ingested. You should make sure that you are truly using activated charcoal. Be wary of where you are getting your activated charcoal because if they are not truly activated versions, you could be subjecting yourself to harm.

2. Using hydrogen peroxide.

Hydrogen peroxide has the ability to whiten the teeth. But be wary when using it because it can be quite potent. Using hydrogen peroxide can damage the enamel of the teeth when used haphazardly. Make sure you know how to use it properly, otherwise, you could end up inflicting damage to the teeth which can lead to the wear and tear of the enamel.

When this happens, you might suffer from tooth sensitivity. The enamel is the first layer of protection of our teeth, so a damaged tooth enamel can cause pain and discomfort. It’s irreversible but can be treated by your dentist in Kamloops.

3. Going on an extreme diet.

Depriving yourself of multiple food groups can be bad for your dental health. Your teeth might not be getting the nutrients they need, especially calcium. When that happens, you could become prone to tooth loss and other dental conditions.

4. Using lemon juice and baking soda as toothpaste.

Lemon juice is acidic, so it can make your teeth more sensitive. Baking soda, on the other hand, has natural abrasive properties. You should use this treatment sparingly. Don’t use it every day like how you would use a regular toothpaste unless you want your teeth to become hypersensitive.

It’s best to talk to your Kamloops dentist if there are cosmetic changes that you want to do with your teeth. Go to Riverside Dental Clinic to get the treatments that you need and avoid experimenting at home. Once your teeth are damaged, you can’t restore them without the use of dental treatments.
