How do I Find a Good Psychologist?

Posted by Jason Norman on March 19th, 2021

Finding a good psychologist is not easy, because psychology is what I like to call a soft science. That is, there are a host of different schools of theory based around it, and given how different each individual is, and the ethics regarding invasive experimentation on the psyche, there is no end-all solution to most psychological issues.

One thing that I definitely recommend is a psychologist that does place some faith in the concept of meditation. If you are willing to search nearby, you also have a great many choices for a venue for meditation in Point Pleasant, for example. While I can’t give you an end-all answer to how you find the best psychologist in Brick, I will give you some basic information to help you make the best decision based on your circumstances.

Therapists and psychologists are not the same thing!

Yeah, that’s something I need to point out first of all. A psychologist is capable of making psychological diagnoses, and can also write prescriptions for medicines, various forms of therapy and so forth, where a therapist can do none of these things. This is not to devalue a capable therapist, but do know that you should only be seeing a psychologist if you feel like you have serious underlying issues that you can us all simply by talking them out someone.

Look for modern practitioners!

You have to get slightly technical when looking for a psychologist in Brick, because there are plenty of psychologists that still ascribe to theories such as those posed by Sigmund Freud or Carl Jung. While these pioneers in the mental sciences did a lot, and some of their theories and ideas proved to be a fairly practical well into today, they were also wrong about a lot of things, and their idea of gentle treatment and handling patients doesn’t hold up by today’s standards at all.

Look for a practitioner who ascribes to modern theories, and has attended a respected university, not some low-level higher education venue.

What about meditation?

If you are interested in meditation in Point Pleasant, this also depends on what type of meditation you are looking for. There are a host of different approaches to meditation, even if you narrow it down to the stereotypical types of meditation from middle and far Eastern Asia, that still leaves a wide range of choices. Are you interested in various forms of Buddhist meditation? What about something closer to Taoist practices? Or, you may be interested in something a little more “New Age”, or something with a little bit of psychology and science behind.

Before spending money going to a place with directed meditation, I suggest learning about these different forms of meditation online, and trying them out yourself, and seeing which ones seem like they would work if you had the proper guide. None of these is actually any better than the other, it is entirely dependent upon the individual. I, for example, get a lot out of traditional Buddhist meditation, whereas my girlfriend gets a whole lot more out of a westernized “New Age” approach to it. It’s very case-specific.
