Understanding Corrosion Inhibitor and Its Industrial Uses

Posted by novamen on May 4th, 2015

In today’s highly industrialized world in which there is so much reliance on materials such as steel, corrosion has been a huge problem. This concern is not only limited to the multibillion industries but may extend to the lives of ordinary people. Corrosion can be very costly not just in the financial aspect but also to the safety of people and the environment.

Until such time that a material is discovered that does not corrode, the thrust would be in the prevention of corrosion. While there may be numerous methods available in addressing this issue, the most viable at the moment would be in the use of corrosion inhibitor.

What is a Corrosion Inhibitor?

In its simplest terms, a corrosion inhibitor is a substance that is added or attached to a material to decrease the rate of corrosion of said material. Corrosion may be defined as gradual deterioration of a material, usually those made of metals, due to the chemical reaction with the environment.

The best example would be the rusting of common items made of metals, which may be characterized by its discoloration or the formation of pits and cracks. With the addition of a corrosion inhibitor, the corrosion of these materials will be drastically reduced thereby prolonging the usefulness and life of the material, product, or structure.

What are the Types of Corrosion Inhibitors?

Corrosion inhibitors are available in different types which are in response to the various types of materials as well as the corroding agents. Corrosion inhibitors used for the oil industry will be different with those used for the construction of a house or production of goods made of materials aside from metal.

Whether its formulation is synthetic or natural, corrosion inhibitor may be classified in a number o ways. It can be organic or inorganic based on its chemical nature. It can also be categorised based on its mechanism of actions, falling under anodic, cathodic, or anodic-cathodic. Another classification would be as oxidants or not oxidants, based on the absorption action.

Choice of Corrosion Inhibitor

With so many forms of corrosion inhibitors, it is very important to determine the proper type to be used for your needs. Examples of factors to be considered would include the type of materials, degree of exposure to the elements, the environment, and method of application. It is vital to get the specifications from your engineer or seek assistance from the suppliers who are knowledgeable about corrosion inhibitors.
