How to Select the Right Boarding Kennel?

Are you planning a trip out of town and can’t bring your pet with you?Agood boarding kennel can give your beloved pet high quality care—and you, peace of mind. Here are some pointers on selecting a boarding kennel that is right for your dog or cat.

1. Check the facilities. The kennel should be free of offensive odor, well lit, and managed by diligent staff. Sanitation is very important. Check the living and playing areas. Do they look and smell clean? Are they free of urine and waste? Do the animals look stress-free? Are they given water and proper bedding? Also check if there are web cameras set up that allow you to see your furry pal while you're away. If the kennel refuses to give you an impromptu tour, they may be hiding something. It’s best not to leave your pet there.

2. You should also look at the issue of overcrowding. Ask how many animals are usually boarded at any given time. The staff-to-dog ratio should be no more than 1:10. You want your pet to get individual attention, after all.

3. Find out what the kennel’s policy is regarding pets that suddenly falls sick. What will they do to your dog or catif it gets diarrhea, won’t eat, or breaks a toenail? Do they have quick access to a veterinarian if your pet is in need medical attention?

4. Get to know the staff. Kennel workers do not need to be certified in animal training and behavior, so the factor to look for is overall attitude and attentiveness. They should know important details about the dogs and cats under their care. Good kennel assistants will have plenty of questions for you and your pet. They will ask about your pet’s exercise and dietary needs, medications, favorite toy, and other such pertinent information. Trust your gut instinct. Is the kennel workers friendly, patient, and genuinely concerned for the welfare of your pet?

5. Ask about staffing hours. Most kennels are not manned 24 hours a day, but good ones have a system in place so that someone checks on the animals every so often during the night. The best facilities are often family run and located on the family property, so that someone can take action should there be an emergency. You should also ensure that the kennel is open during the hours you intend to pick up or drop off your pet.
