How ONP Paper Scrap Can Easily Be Recycled for Further Use

Posted by scrapsindustriesinc on March 22nd, 2021

Paper is often considered as the best alternative to plastic because it’s more sustainable and is easier to recycle. That’s true, but that’s not the whole picture. Did you know that even paper can contribute to pollution?

That’s right. This biodegradable material has its disadvantages. It requires four times as much energy to produce paper than plastic, and obtaining it means you’ll have to cut down numerous trees!

On top of that, paper’s manufacturing process requires a lot of toxic chemicals, water, and fuel. But this doesn’t mean that plastic is the better alternative. Instead, it’s best that you opt for recycled paper, such as ONP paper scrap and OCC paper scrap.

Difference between ONP paper scrap and OCC paper scrap

ONP comes from old newspapers, while OCC scrap comes from corrugated cardboard boxes. Although both differ in thickness and appearance, they can still be recycled and reused for various purposes.

The OCC and ONP paper scrap recycling process

Generally, OCC scrap is turned into production materials for new corrugated containers. To recycle it, you first need to open the cardboard and flatten it to fit into storage containers. Harmful contaminants and other impurities must also be removed before recycling. The final product is reused for packaging and manufacturing recycled paperboard, and unbleached kraft paperboard.

Meanwhile, recycled ONP scrap is used to make brand-new newspapers. You may not be aware of it, but the newspaper you’re reading now might have ONP paper content.

Similar to OCC, ONP paper scrap must be rid of any contaminants before it is transported for recycling. It’s also best to keep the paper dry, or else the re-pulping process will be ruined.

The benefits of recycled ONP and OCC paper scrap

As mentioned above, paper can just be as damaging to the environment as plastic. Although the process of recycling paper scrap requires energy, it does not consume as much as you would when manufacturing new sheets of paper.

With paper recycling, you’ll get to avoid excessive cutting down of trees and reduce greenhouse gas emissions. In fact, the process itself saves around 17 trees, 69% of raw materials, and 80% of water!
