Cleaning Stainless Steel Tips

Below are a few ideas and Eco friendly tips for cleaning your stainless steel flatware and appliances.

One of the most often overlooked household cleaners available is undiluted white vinegar. It's an excellent natural source for your cleaning. It's perfect for dissolving any grease stains as its both non-toxic and will not damage the finish on your stainless steel. Simply take a clean damp cloth and rub the stains with vinegar. Then follow with warm soapy water and your left with a shiny bright pot or pan. This also works well on any utensils as well.

If you find yourself faced with those really stubborn spots, then use a mixture of non-gel toothpaste mixed with ammonia. This should do the trick and is easy to do as well. Just apply the mix with a soft clean cloth and follow with a good rinsing.

Remember any time you are scrubbing a persistent stain on your cookware then to risk damaging or removing the chrome finish always scrub in the direction of the finish. Never against it and do not scrub in a circular motion as well.

If you are finding yourself completely exhausted with your patience being worn then, well then it's time to try a mild abrasive cleaner. You do want to avoid any harsh chemical cleaners as they could do more damage than good. So I suggest starting with a homemade solution of water and baking soda. Mix these two ingredients together into a paste like creamy consistency. Then rub this cleaning mixture onto your stainless steel with a soft cloth. Rub well (remember to rub with the finish) and rinse thoroughly when finished.

If for some reason this does not work or if you do not want to take the time to make a mixture (as described above) then I recommend a cleaner called "Bar Keepers Friend" which is available at your local grocery store. It's also economically priced as well. It will make your stainless steel shine like new.

If you've chosen large stainless steel appliances for your home such as refrigerator, stove or dishwasher then I suggest cleaning those with a mixture of one part water to one part white distilled vinegar. Simply pour this into a spray bottle and use a clean dry cloth of paper towel to wipe them clean. Of course after you've done this it's also an excellent idea afterwords to apply a layer of stainless steel polish. This way they are protected from attracting dirt and grime.
