Essential Items For a Music Studio

A music studio is an expensive specialized facility for music recording, manipulation, mixing, and sound production of both vocals and instrumental sounds. In an ordinary room in a home, you will find five to eight audio tracks with different tracks recorded on different sources, some recorded using expensive equipment, some using inexpensive equipment. To further complicate matters, there might be one overdub or another complication during the process. This entire setup consumes a lot of time and effort. You can further subdivide the tasks into such tasks as assigning tracks to a vocalist or instrumentalist, overdubs, editing, adding effects, and so forth.

Fortunately, the above situation has been almost eliminated thanks to computer technology. Today, there are available music production and recording studios for virtually any type of audio production. They are much more affordable and easy to use than conventional music studio facilities. Some of them also have the capability to perform virtual instruments and mixers.

One of the key components of a home studio recording equipment is the computer. It is very important that your computer and its sound card function well. Cheap computers from local computer stores usually suffer from problems when it comes to sound quality. You will want a sound card that supports the latest digital music software that are widely available in the market. You can choose from popular software like Pro Tools, Cubase, Digital Performer, Nuendo, Sonar, Reason, Fruity Loops, Digital Mix, ProTools 7, Avid tracks Live, Nuendo Music Composer, Sound Forge, Kontakt, Digital Audio Workstation, Digital Mix 2, etc.

Another essential component of a home studio recording equipment is the audio interface. Interfaces connect the audio hardware with the computer. It also facilitates audio input and output. There are different types of interfaces to choose from depending on the type of audio production programs that you are using. The main types of audio interface are Direct Contact Interface (DDA), Firewire interface, PCMCIA interface, USB interface, etc.

The next big piece of equipment that any music studio would need is the recording monitor. When you are recording live and acoustic music, the live monitoring is very important as you can hear each and every detail clearly. When you are recording for a television show, you can clearly hear the recorded scene because the screen of the monitors is smaller than the size of the TV. However, if you are recording for a motion picture production, then a large monitors is recommended so you can get a wider and greater view of your recordings.

Other recording tools that are important in a music studio include digital audio sampler or mics, condenser microphones, headphones, and condenser units. Digital samplers are used to compress the recording sounds into smaller file formats. Mics, on the other hand, are used to transmit the recording signal without changing it in any way. Headphones are used to generate a good quality sound for the mics and condenser microphones to capture the sound for the computer.

One more essential item that you should have in a music studio is an isolation booth. These are basically the enclosures or boxes which you can place over the main studio to eliminate background noise from being recorded into the main studio. There are different types of isolation booths available in the market made of wood, metal, or plastic. However, an isolation booth is most commonly used in the larger music studios where the sound quality is really crucial.

Condenser microphones are usually used for input and output of the audio interface devices. However, if the direct mikes are to be used for recording, condenser microphones work better as the output devices. Therefore, if you are going to use condenser microphones, you might as well invest in professional-grade headphones to take care of the direct mike output. However, if you have a budget for audio interface and monitoring, then it would be best if you use the isolation booths. These two devices are very effective in eliminating background noises and also in tracking the live performance.
