What Type of Clothes Should You Wear After a C-Section

A cesarean section is a surgical procedure where the baby is delivered through an incision in the mother's abdomen.

This procedure results in a horizontal scar left on the stomach.

Though you won't have to worry about stitches from tearing you will have stitches on your lower tummy.

This can take up to 2 months to heal completely.

During this time you will want to make sure you're keeping them clean, taking care of them as needed, and avoiding any friction over the site of the incision.

Certain clothing can cause more friction than other clothes.

This will cause irritation along with your already sore stitches.

One way you can keep them from getting irritated is by wearing postpartum clothes that will AVOID exactly this.

Below I will go over what type of clothes you should wear after a c-section.

High Waisted Leggings

If you need to wear bottoms then wear a pair of high-waisted leggings.

Having the waistband higher up will help keep the band from constantly rubbing on your womb (which would be painful).

I would keep it at leggings though and wouldn't go for the jeans whether or not they are high-waisted.

Can you just imagine what jeans would feel like up against stitches rather than a softer fabric like leggings have?

High Waisted Underwear

Now you can't just avoid underwear.  You have to wear underwear during postpartum as you will have bleeding for about 6 weeks no matter how you delivered.

So wear high-waisted underwear that are made from 100% cotton.

Night Gowns

Loose nightgowns are gonna be the most ideal for at night.

Nightgowns will be nice and loose and will have fewer chances of your stitches getting irritated by being rubbed by the fabric.

And if you're nursing they make lots of different breastfeeding nightgowns too.

Dresses

Dresses are another clothing option during postpartum.

Loose dresses during the day are a great choice as they won't rub on your wound as much.

And they're cute and comfy!

Clothing You Should Avoid After a C-section

Clothes you should avoid wearing after a c-section are any kind of tight-fitting clothing.

This includes pants, shirts, dresses, and underwear.

Why?

Because clothes that are tight and more fitted to your body will rub on your stitches more.  This will make them irritated and become even more painful.

So it's best to just not wear them at all after birth.

Of course, though that doesn't mean you can't EVER wear tight clothes again!

You just have to wait until your incision has completely healed.  Which is typically somewhere between 6-8 weeks.

Conclusion

Now when you're going shopping for your postpartum wardrobe, be sure to buy comfy and loose clothing.

And if you buy bottoms be sure to get them all high-waisted!
