Government Promotes PLI Scheme For Manufacturing Medical Devices In India

In a recent notification, India's information has given approval to an application from various medical devices manufacturers under the Production LinkedIn Incentive (PLI) Scheme for promoting domestic manufacturing.

According to the Ministry of Chemicals and Fertilizers, the companies which have got approval are

  • Siemens Healthcare
  • Sahajan and Medical Technologies
  • Nipro India Corporation
  • Wipro GE healthcare.

These will lead to a total investment of about Rs. 729.63 crores by all companies and employment generation for about 2304 persons. It has been proposed that the commercial production will start from April 1, 2022, and the disbursal of the show in association with the incentive offered by the Government in a period of five years would be up to RS.121 crore per applicant per target segment.

The classification of the medical device rules and the regulatory rules are under the control of DGCI. The Union Health Ministry, in the year 2017, published new Medical rules and IVD regulations to increase the country's Drugs and Cosmetics Act for making efficient regulations. All the given medical laws required for regulatory approval will impact the medical device and IVD sector.

All regulations under medical device rules will help balance the use of medical devices with global standards to smoothen the manufacturing and import of medical devices. This is in compliance with Medical device rules 2017.

These will make the whole country self-dependent to a big extent in a specific target segment in the medical device sector. This application was invited under four varied target segments. They are

  • Cancer care/ radiotherapy medical devices.
  • Radiology and imaging along with nuclear imaging devices
  • Anaesthetics and Cardiorespiratory medical devices, which also includes the cardio-respiratory category
  • Renal care medical devices
  • All implants which also includes implantable electronic devices.

The Department of Pharmaceuticals launched the PLI scheme for the promotion of domestic manufacturing of medical devices will make sure a level playing sector for the domestic manufacturers with a financial outlay of about Rs. 3420 crore for the period 2020-21 and 2027-28.

Under the scheme for domestic manufacturing promotion, the Government has accepted all applications from various manufacturers of medical devices. The system will make the whole country self-dependent.
