Depressive Disorder - Cope Effectively With Trivedi Effect

When faced with adverse situations, it is natural to feel low and sad, and unable to focus on other matters. Most people become normal in a few days, or weeks, after coming to terms with the situation. Unfortunately some people take much longer time; they tend to remain in a depressed state of mind for months, not able to take control of their lives.

These are warning signs of depressive disorder:

  • Lack of energy/enthusiasm to perform even routine tasks

  • No interest in surroundings or personal appearance

  • Persistent suicidal thoughts and talk about death

  • Abnormal eating and sleeping patterns

  • Low self-esteem/confidence

  • Anxiety in social situations, preference for staying alone

  • Irritability at little situations

Manic Depression on the other hand, is a cyclical disorder where the person goes into depression, exhibiting the above mentioned symptoms for say a few months, and then is at the other extreme – mania. When in this situation, they display the exact opposite symptoms and are overenthusiastic and hyper energetic, and often reckless.

There may be gaps of normalcy between the two extremes; in some cases, the person may not be depressed or manic for quite a long time too. It depends on the individual and their situation. The causes also vary from person to person. Some of the most common causes of manic depression are:

  • Hereditary causes

  • Major life events like loss of a loved one, birth of a child, marriage of a child

  • Financial loss or failure in career

  • Failed relationship

  • Being a victim of a crime or accident

  • Major illness or surgery

Overcoming depression is not a simple task but it’s not impossible either. For the family of a person suffering from depression it takes a lot of patience. Dealing with a person who behaves abnormal most of the time is not easy. However, there a few things you can do to help your loved one cope with manic depression:

  • Talk to them, encourage them to get moving

  • Do some activity with them like say reading or gardening

  • Make sure they eat healthy food and at the right time

  • Ensure they get adequate sleep

  • Boost their confidence
