Electronic Shelf Labels (ESLs) are used by retailers to display product pricing on closed shelves. An electronic shelf label (ESL) system automatically updates the product price when a price change is detected from a remote control terminal. In most cases, electronic display units are permanently attached to the front of retail shelving systems. Electronic shelf labels provide several advantages for manufacturers and retailers. Product pricing is updated at any time during the day using a single-board computer terminal or remotely over the Internet. Retailers can use electronic labels to add product information such as product name, description, manufacturer's part number, price, and availability. 

Most display units come with software that allows data to be customized, thus giving details that are tailored to individual needs. Electronic labels for sale provide additional benefits for businesses such as product introduction and maintenance tracking, inventory control, and pricing. Electronic shelf labels provide additional functionality for the user by adding application software such as a barcode scanner, cash register, printer, or recognition system for gift cards. This can improve sales by reducing lost sales due to incorrect or missing product. The ability to add application software makes the labels more appealing to customers. For instance, if a customer enters a product code for a pen, although finds out it is a pair of running shoes, she will not miss it if she has applied the correct code for a running shoe. 

Electronic Shelf Labels have several advantages for retailers. The primary advantage is the direct access to shelf-space, which can provide important information to customers. If a retailer only uses standard sizes printed on printed labels, then the product information and price may be displayed in long vertical lines on all shelves in the retail environment. With electronic shelf labels, retailers can provide clear, legible product information that is easy for the customer to find.
