Books About Addiction & Recovery

Posted by Care Addiction Center on April 7th, 2021

As an addiction counselor and Director of Outpatient Services at Care Addiction Center, I often get asked to recommend books about addiction. While self-help books are not a replacement for a comprehensive addiction treatment program for those struggling with substance abuse, they can be helpful throughout the journey to recovery.

Codependent No More by Melody Beattie

Codependent No More is great for support systems, spouses, parents, children that have struggled with the identified patient. It helps to explain codependency and how to counteract it once the loved one is sober. It's a very powerful book.

Quit Like a Woman by Holly Whitaker

Quit Like a Woman is a positive perspective on the challenges of sobriety that women can face in their recovery. There isn't much out there that is focused on women in recovery so I wanted to put this one out there.

The Unexpected Joy of Being Sober by Catherine Gray

The Unexpected Joy of Being Sober is a book that details one individual's recovery and how they were able to overcome extreme obstacles to be sober and how their life has changed for the better.
