How to Organize Studies for Success in College - The Education Post

Posted by Educationpost on April 9th, 2021

Books and phone in one hand, papers and pen in the other. Cramming notes while running, backpack slipping off the shoulder, hair untidy, puffy eyes and late to the examination hall. Quite a typical visual for a college student. However, international students in Australia usually stay on top of their study game and seldom look like this. Here are the ways you can learn to do the same:

    1. Make a study timeline

For achieving success in college, knowing how much time you need to study well is the first step. Make a timeline to mark out the actual hours you will get to complete studying. Do this before assignments and exams to be ready for execution.

    1. Prioritise tasks

Colleges in Australia offer so much to do that sometimes you can plan all we want but still fall short of time. In such cases, make a priority list for studying so that you cover the most important, higher weightage portions first. Then if time permits, look at the smaller topics. This way you will cover more in less time.

    1. Set time limits

Studying without a timer is almost never a good idea. You already know how much there is to study. All you need to do is estimate how much time you would spend on it to study efficiently. Just sitting at your desk all day will not fetch you any results.

    1. Set different study goals

Getting scholarships to study in Australia is only half the battle. Performing consistently in college is equally important. To do this, break the monotony and add to your strengths by planning different goals for different study sessions. This will keep you motivated and focussed each time you sit down to study. And you will end up covering more topics than by going only one way.

    1. Identify your peak hours

University campuses in Australia have an exciting student life but the excitement and energy levels are never the same throughout the day. There are peak times when your energy is higher. Find out these peak times and tackle the toughest study pieces during this time. It is the best method of organizing studies and preps.

    1. Maintain a task calendar

Students who achieve success in college keep an assignment and exams/tests calendar. Every once in a while, take a peek at the calendar to see what’s coming up so you can plan your study time in advance. Don’t forget to regularly update this calendar with latest tasks.

    1. Liven up your workspace

Use post-it’s, highlighters and other stationery aids around your study space to help you organize and keep track of academics. Let your study space look like a vibrant, dynamic workstation. Make your space even more efficient with a few provisions for coffee, snacks and water.

    1. Break it down

Break down bigger projects into small achievable daily goals. This way you will not feel burdened and will steadily complete the assignment/studying on time. Each day you will get the motivation to get to the next bit.

    1. Avoid last minute hustle

Last minute panic studying is the worst. Avoid it until it is absolutely necessary. Otherwise, you will make the same mistakes every time you study and are bound to miss out on important parts of the study material. Last minute studying also causes unnecessary anxiety that is bad for your health.

    1. Get a Study Buddy

Try a study partner if you can. For some it doesn’t work at all. But for others having a study partner keeps them focussed and on track with prep. Try this and see if it works for you. If you find it keeps you going, you’ve found the perfect mantra!
