No Incision Weight Loss Surgery May Provide an Alternative

With a third of American adults estimated to be obese, this condition has reached epidemic proportions in the United States. Complications such as increased risk for heart disease, diabetes, certain forms of cancer and stroke make it especially troublesome. That’s why many people who find themselves obese or morbidly obese are exploring the potential bariatric surgery can deliver. For some, however, the fear of surgical procedures, scarring and related complications may make them think twice about this potentially life-saving weight loss alternative.

Fortunately, a new non-surgical, surgical procedure may make the prospect of weight loss intervention more attractive for those who fear complicated bariatric options. This new procedure, called primary obesity surgery endolumenal, involves using a technique that pleats the stomach, preventing expansion for food. The whole procedure is performed without the need for a single incision. Instead of cutting, surgeons use a tube that is passed down the throat to access the stomach. In most cases, patients are able to go home the same day and may return to their normal work routines after a few days.

Still in the testing phases, this less-invasive procedure has produced dramatic results so far. Twenty-two patients in a Spanish study, for example, reported losing an average of 62 percent of their excess fat after a single year. Most also reported feeling quite well after a few days and the surgery was effective at helping patients feel fuller faster.

While not yet approved for widespread use, the surgical procedure is under testing in America, as well. If the results continue to prove promising, this non-traditional surgical option may one day soon provide an alternative for those who fear the complications of more intensive weight loss surgery.

To learn more about the benefits of weight loss surgery, be sure to consult with a licensed healthcare provider. There are a variety of options that can help those who are obese shed pounds to improve overall health.
