The dental technologies have come too far and besides the Dix Hills braces and invisalign, there are various other appliances that can be a part of your treatment. In this article, we are going to talk about orthodontic spacers and why you should have those in your mouth. We are already aware that Dix Hills braces will be the first step to your perfect smile. But do you also know that your Jericho orthodontist needs to prepare your teeth for the treatment to follow. They usually put spaces between your teeth to move them apart from each other. These are orthodontic spacers and can be made up of either metal or rubber. Orthodontic spacers are also known as orthodontic separators.

The placement and purpose

The placement of such orthodontic spacers is not at all complicated. It can be done in your regular visit to the orthodontist. Firstly, the separators like elastic rings are slipped between the teeth with dental floss. The dental floss is later removed from the teeth. The orthodontic separators remain in their place to create space between teeth and the molars. Besides using these separators for the treatment of braces, they are also used to deal with many dental issues. Orthodontic spacers can also treat ectopic teeth and moral displacement.

The duration to wear those spacers

Under normal conditions, the spacers stay in the mouth for around 7-10 days. In case, they are needed for a long time, your orthodontist shall not remove the spacers until the orthodontic treatment is complete. In such case, the rubber spacers will be replaced by the metal ones. Their placement will also be changed to suit the orthodontic treatment.

There are mainly two kinds of orthodontic separator:

  1. Rubber orthodontic spacers
  2. Metal orthodontic spacers

The separators should not hurt in an ideal scenario; however, the intensity of the pain will also depend on the tolerance of the patient. Some people might experience extreme pain and on the other hand, some people will be very comfortable with the separators. Although there is a certain amount of pressure that is applied while fitting the separators and it can also lead of jaw tenderness.

In case, your molars are very tight and close, the orthodontic spacers will be required to create more space for the braces. This can be one reason for the spacers to pain. Thus, we say that the intensity of the pain will vary from person to person. While you have these spacers in the mouth, you should always maintain good oral hygiene and avoid eating sticky food.
