Chinese Stocks in the U.S.: Chalco, Unicom, PetroChina, Sohu

The Bank of New York Mellon China ADR Index, which tracks American depositary receipts, fell 0.2 percent to 429.92. The American Stock Exchange China Index gained 0.3 percent to 237.51. The Shanghai Composite Index was little changed at 2,842.43.

The following companies were among the most active Chinese shares in New York trading. Stock symbols are in parentheses and prices are as of 5:39 p.m. New York time.

Aluminum Corp. of China Ltd. (ACH US) declined 1.1 percent to .10. China’s biggest maker of the lightweight metal and Rio Tinto Group, the world’s third-largest mining company, agreed to jointly seek and develop coking coal and copper deposits in China.

China Unicom Ltd. (CHU US) lost 0.6 percent to .74. The nation’s second-largest mobile-phone company was rebuked by the government for threatening to freeze customer deposits if they use Apple Inc.’s iPhone on a rival network.

PetroChina Co. (PTR US) decreased 0.9 percent to 9.15. The biggest Chinese oil company will shut West Pacific Petrochemical Corp., its 200,000 barrel-a-day plant for scheduled maintenance in March or April, the official Xinhua News Agency reported.

Sohu.com Inc. (SOHU US) jumped 7.2 percent to .50. The operator of China’s fourth-most-visited Web portal announced that its online role-playing game subsidiary, Changyou.com Ltd, will begin open-beta testing of its 2D, turn-based game San Jie Qi Yuan.

Suntech Power Holdings Co Ltd (STP US) surged 4.8 percent to .28, the highest level since Nov. 16. China’s largest solar panel maker rose after the Chinese government said it would introduce new subsidies to further stimulate use of the cleaner form of energy.
