Why dentists use dental drills

When many people talk about their greatest fears in life, going to the Dentist is a very popular choice. There are many irrational thoughts that go into our fears but the sound of the Dentists best friend, the dental drill is enough to strike fear in even the toughest person.

The dental drill is one of the most important pieces of equipment in a modern dentist’s practice and the tool that the Dentist turns to the most. Some dental drills are designed for general purpose dentistry, while others are designed for specific applications.  There are various categories of dental handpiece, the high speed and low speed dental handpiece, each have their own special advantages, uses and functions.

Three of the main uses for dental drill are -

Remove Decay

The easy way to avoid tooth decay is to stop eating your favourite sugar filled treats, but considering for most of us that is impossible at some stage you will develop tooth decay and more than likely a cavity. If that is the case then upon visiting the dentist you will embark on your journey of self-discovery in the dental chair, watching the dentist stick a speeding metal instrument in your mouth and remove the decay from your teeth. If your lucky then you might only need a heavy clean but those of us with sugar addictions will feel the wrath of the filling or a crown. Your Dentist will use his drill to remove the decay, and then fill the hole.

Polishing fillings

The dental drill is multipurpose drill that your dentist can use for many applications. It can even be used for good as well as evil and I would view polishing your fillings as a positive outcome from a dental visit. With many heads available to fit on the dental drill, seeing a softer buffing attachment shouldn’t bring the normal dread of seeing the pointed drill bit. Having your filling or fillings polished at the dentists is one of the better dental appointments that you can have.

Cosmetic dentistry

If you were to ask most people what they think is their worst feature a good percentage of those people would say their teeth. Cosmetic Dentistry as really taken off over the last 20 years with many actually choosing to have work done on the teeth rather than out of necessity. The dental drill is an important tool in this process, and it helps to mould and shape the new teeth as well as fine tuning through polishing to ensure that your new teeth are as comfortable as they should be.
