We all know it feels good to have a massage. We hope you will feel more relaxed after the massage. Did you know the scientific benefits of how massage can help reduce stress? Let's first see what actually creates stress for the body, and then find out how massage can counteract the negative effects of stress.

An endocrinologist, Dr. Hans Sale, coined the term stress. Can you imagine life before the word stress??? He divided stress into two main categories; eustress and distress. Stress or good stress is the type of stress we experience when we exercise, buy a new car, or go on a first date. We are not worried about this type of stress. In fact, I could even go so far as to say that we all need a little more of this stress in our lives! Distress is the negative stress most people are used to. Disappointment at work fights with a loved one, parent stress, or being late - these are all types of distress. Massage in Al Satwa

Let's develop distress for a moment because we're going to focus on this type of stress. Distress is not just emotional stress, such as a divorce, job loss, or breakup. Although these are some of the worst types of stress anyone can experience. Distress can also be caused on a subtler level due to inappropriate food choices, food allergies, lack of sleep, poor posture, exposure to chemicals such as household cleaners or makeup. Illness, surgery, or hospitalization are also sources of stress. Stress is more than just the feelings we experience; often our bodies are exhausted without us even realizing it!

Now that we understand stress better, let's take a look at what it does for the body. When the body is under adrenal stress, in particular, the adrenal cortex secretes cortisol into the blood. Cortisol affects many activities in the body. Chronic stress can increase cortisol levels and can:

~ Raise blood sugar, thus increasing the risk of metabolic syndrome or diabetes

~ Slowing blood flow to the digestive tract, slowing down digestion, preventing digestion and

weight gain

~ Weaken your immune system, making you more vulnerable to infections and illnesses

~ Reduces bone formation, which can lead to osteoporosis or osteopenia

~ Turn off the reproductive system, increasing the risk of miscarriage or infertility

~ Slows down the thyroid gland, reduces energy, and slows down metabolism
