Organic Mattresses - A Healthy Alternative to conventional Mattresses

Organic mattresses are healthy alternatives to conventional mattresses. One of the greatest hazards of traditional mattresses is exposure to different types of chemicals, which these products are subjected to during manufacturing and quality control. As of July 2007, mattresses that are made and sold in the United States are required to comply with CPSC (Consumer Product Safety Commission) flame retardant standards. This was enacted so that people can have more time to escape their home in case of mattress fires. As a result, conventional mattresses use chemical flame retardants to ensure compliance—chemicals that contain high levels of toxins and as studies have found, some carcinogens.

An increasing number of people are also testing positive for huge doses of compound elements and chemicals in their systems. Symptoms of this kind of exposure include, but are not limited to fatigue, rashes, headaches, sore throats, skin irritations, bronchitis, nose bleeds, burning sensations, and coughing. Avoiding these health nuances and other graver conditions that often result from overexposure to mattress chemicals requires a commitment to changing your sleeping environment, starting with your mattress. Organic mattresses do away with these toxic chemicals with their use of naturally cultivated (pesticide-free agriculture of) raw materials such as cotton, wool, and latex rubber. These raw materials are also processed using methods that ensure the least exposure to chemicals so as to avoid contaminating the end product with harmful toxins.

PBDEs or polybrominated diphenylethers are among the most common types of flame retardant chemicals used in bedding foams and different types of furniture. While the use of this class of flame resistant chemical does save property and lives, it is not without unintended consequences. Growing evidence supports the hypothesis that they cause harmful body toxicity as they persist in the environment and in turn, accumulate in the body. Organic mattresses are free from flame retardants as they are made with materials that feature natural flame resistance. Wool is known for this property and is increasingly becoming a popular alternative to chemical-doused mattresses.

CFCs or chlorofluorocarbons are a type of chemicals that were also commonly present as flame retardants on beddings and mattresses. This is until their ban in the late 1980s. Other types of chemicals that be found in conventional mattresses include PCBs or chlorinated hydrocarbons, PVCs or polyvinyl chloride, formaldehyde, PFOAs or perfluoroctanoic acids, and other carcinogenic chemicals and pesticides—all of which, you can avoid by switching to organic mattresses.
