A Look at Fracturing and Why It?s Performed

Recovering the greatest amount of oil or gas trapped within subterranean formations is vital not only for company profits, but also to ensure a steady flow of materials to market. When the desired product is stuck far below the earth’s surface, hydraulic fracturing techniques may be used to enhance production and ensure deposits are properly removed from the earth in a safe and expedient way.

Hydraulic fracturing involves a process in which a fluid is injected deep into a well bore under high pressure. This injection calls for the use of high pressure fracturing pumps that are able to pump the fluids deep into the formation in order to open up the formation for enhanced production of gas, oil and other natural resources. The act essentially “fractures” the formation open for easier access to the natural resources found inside.

The fluids used in the hydraulic fracturing process typically contain mostly water with varying amounts of fracturing additives and other ingredients meant to increase the flow of the desired products. The right chemical mixtures to use in a fracturing operation will depend a great deal on the soil and earth composition around the well and the natural resource being pumped or mined out of the earth. Oil and mining companies rely on experts in the chemical industry to help them establish the right formulation to use to not only enhance production, but also to ensure a safe operation.

Hydraulic fracturing essentially stimulatesa well into greater production. The process got its start in the 1940s as an experiment and has since been proven to be a highly effective commercial technique. The process delivers a number of economic benefits not only for natural gas and oil companies, but their customers as well. A deep knowledge not only of well drilling is required to successfully manage a fracturing operation, but also a solid understanding of the right chemical compounds required for individual jobs.
