Different types of long clocks

There is a great variety of long wall clocks in the market that is liked by a lot of people. Most of the people buy such clocks for the purpose of decoration along with the need for the display of time. There are a lot of such clocks which have very unique designs and are different from each other. They have different specific names also, which show their uniqueness. Some of the types of clocks are mentioned below.

  • Mechanical clocks
  • Clocks driven by springs
  • Pendulum clocks, etc.

Details about the types of clocks

Mechanical clocks

The mechanical clocks are considered to be the earliest clocks of the history. There is a word “Horologia” that is derived from the Greek language which was used for describing the clocks to be run mechanically. There could also be long wall clocks to be run mechanically in the ancient times just for giving a more traditional look. The first mechanical clock appeared  in Europe.

Clocks driven by springs

The makers of clocks continued developing their arts in a lot of different ways. It was a challenge that was technically accepted for building such clocks that were smaller in size. In such clocks, the precision needs to be improved and the reliability should be enhanced. It was difficult to make such clocks initially, but now it is not a big deal. However, the clocks driven by springs can also be such that they are like long wall clocks to be hung on the walls, but they are rare.

Pendulum clocks

Pendulum clocks are such type of clocks in which there is a bob that swings for regulating the movement of a clock. In the early times, the bob used to be used for regulating the motion of any kind of device that was meant for time-telling. The idea of a swinging bob was given by Galileo. He used the concept of mathematics in inventing this. There is an interesting history of pendulum clocks. The pendulum clocks can either be such types of clocks that can be placed on a shelf or somewhere or can be like long wall clocks to be hung anywhere on a wall where they look suitable.

Hairspring

A hairspring clock is not supposed to be like long wall clocks. It is such a clock that was initially invented by Huygens and Hooke for controlling the speed of oscillations of the wheel used for balancing. Such clocks are supposed to be usually small in size and can be different from the wall clocks.

Marine chronometer

It is such a clock which is very different from the long wall clocks. It was invented for improving the reliability and precision of clocks. Such clocks have a lot of different uses; like in a sea during travelling in a ship such clocks can be highly useful.

There can be a lot of other types of clocks as well, which have different uses and were invented by different people at different times. Read More
