Stay safe on the roads with the correct bike clothing

If you are a cyclist it is your responsibility to wear the proper bike clothing to make you visible to other road users. There are a number of guidelines in place that you may want to follow, but you shouldn't just stick to these. You can buy many items of clothing and accessories for your bike to make you even more visible, and this is advisable for all cyclists.
The most obvious item of clothing that you will need to buy is a helmet. If you don't wear one when out on the roads, even if you are only cycling a short distance, you will be endangering yourself considerably, and as strong helmets can be bought for a very reasonable price these days, you should certainly get yourself one. Your helmet should fit snugly and must sit squarely on your head, not slipping forwards to obscure your vision or being positioned too far back. If you are involved in an accident you should buy a new helmet right away, as there may be invisible damage to it. If you want to ensure that you stay as safe as possible when cycling, you should buy yourself some body armour. This can protect you from tumbles and falls when cycling and you can most commonly buy elbow, knee, shin, and wrist guards.
The rest of your clothing must not catch on the bicycle and so it should be tight fitting to a certain degree. If this is not possible, get yourself some belt, arm and ankle bands that you can use to secure your clothing and stop it from flapping around. For added visibility at night, get reflective bands and a hi vis waistcoat.
If you cycle often, you might want to consider getting yourself a pair of cycling shoes or some cycling overshoes to keep your actual shoes clean and dry when riding. Cycling shoes are designed to add grip when on your bike in all weather conditions, as well as offering better stability and support than normal shoes. They are ideal for both recreational and sporting cyclists.
Another piece of clothing that you might be interested in buying is a pair of cycling gloves. They can add visibility, as many are reflective, and can help to provide grip and comfort when out riding. Cycling in bad weather can be a nasty experience if you aren't wearing the proper clothing, so get yourself base layers to keep in warmth, along with a cycling jacket to keep you as dry as possible.
