A FAVORITE History of Ancient Egypt - Review

This article is a overview of Temples, Tombs, and Hieroglyphs: A Popular History of Ancient Egypt by Barbara Mertz. I'm particularly reviewing the audio edition. From the text, one can tell that Mertz is an outstanding scholar in your community of Egyptology. She recounts stories of their studies at the Oriental Institute, a prestigious institution in the field. She also exudes moderation, which I consider to be one the very best attributes to be found in a scholar. She is willing to explain where there is uncertainty and a number of scholarly opinion (quite humorously at points) even though the opinions conflict with her own. The material in the book covers the annals of Ancient Egypt from earliest times all the way down to the Christian era. Because the title of the text indicate a significant amount of time is devoted to Temples, Tombs, and Hieroglyphs. Yet unlike many dry history books much of these details is provided in story format when possible. This makes the written text an enjoyable listen/read. The only weakness I perceived after finishing the written text is that a few of the material may be somewhat dated. Admittedly, I downloaded the text because it was on the list of only audio book material that I possibly could find on Ancient Egypt and the date of the original text concerned me a bit (the original was published in the sixties, though I believe it had been updated in 1990). I left wondering if there have been some developments that may have already been left out. Yet I'm also aware that Archaeology and Egyptology are fields that often move slowly. Your safety and our impeccable service makes us first in class takes a long to weigh and debate evidence. Thus, chances are that much of the info in the text still stands.
