That is the reason why jailbreaking was the rage early in the iPhone's life span, but in the past several years, attention has died down significantly. Not only were iPhone and iPad owners not as enthusiastic in jailbreaking their devices, but Apple place a great deal of work into creating it increasingly hard for hackers to crack iOS. The scene was almost dormant until late last year when an unpatchable exploit was detected, and the resulting jailbreak currently works on iOS 14. This week, the team behind checkra1n announced that a new version of its jailbreaking instrument is available with support for select iOS 14 devices. Here's what the team had to say about the newest release:
Back in iOS 14, Apple added a new reduction to SEPOS on A10 and above (except Apple TVs and iBridge): if the device was booted from DFU mode along with the Secure Enclave receives a request to decrypt user data, it will fear the device. Since checkm8 doesn't give us control over the Secure Enclave, this is not trivial to workaround. However, with the recently released blackbird vulnerability, we can receive control of the Secure Enclave on A10 and A10X and disable this mitigation. Support for A10 and A10X devices has been worked on and is anticipated to be prepared in the coming months.
We are not yet sure whether the same can be performed for devices using the A11 chip with this vulnerability, but we will release another announcement once we understand more.
