Digital SLR Camera - What to look for in it?

Posted by Ricoh on August 20th, 2015

In photography circles, the Pentax shooters always stand out. And much of this has to do with the legacy. The very fact that an optical imaging brand stood against the tests of times and technology, adds much more gravity to the brand image. Starting from the old Pentax P30T film digital SLR of 2003 to the Pentax K5 ll - the advancements in the imaging technology have always kept the fans hooked on.

Even the old Pentax P30T from the early 2000s came with 14 megapixels, built-in shake reduction, speedy AF system and a blazing fast 3 frames per second speed - truly a monster of its times.

So what are the things you really want from your camera:

  • Impeccable Image quality
  • Fast and Accurate Autofocus
  • Light and compact form
  • Low light performance

Impeccable Image Quality

If you are looking forward to a medium format, the extra sharpness mode or the S-mode in the series will really make up for some really nice shots.

Moreover, your camera must handle highlights and backlighting well. That too, without much changes in the EV compensation. At the end of it all, your medium format camera must be ready to give you that perfect shot just at any time.

Condensing all this in one point, your camera must have a good image processing engine - from an efficient autofocus to handling exposure in different environments. Hence, giving you more of shots you’d like to keep than discard.

Quick Autofocus

Always find yourself trying to click those fast moving shots? Here comes the real need to look into your autofocus speed. A camera should always feel snappy and responsive at all times, shouldn’t it?

Also, it’s completely normal to prefer a device that locks faster and confidently, even in low-lighting conditions. Even features like AF and auto point select - that helps tracking moving objects - can take the experience a notch further.

Lighter and Compact Form

This doesn’t require much explanation but to give you an idea, the handling of your camera relies a lot on its weight and form. So always remember to check how good it fits in your hands and if you can reach all the buttons properly.

Low Light Performance

Well, who doesn’t want a well exposed image with less noise? So a lot of your camera performance also depends on how well can your sensor adapt to the photographic conditions around you. One must also keep in mind that under-exposed shots with high ISO would work the same. Just that - if you increase it too much, the shot gets ruined.

You may look at it differently, but the overall speed of the camera depends mostly on its processing power, and in most cases would also greatly affect the speed of bracketed shots. In conclusion, a fine camera like a Pentax K-5 ll with high processing power and great ergonomics would make a perfect companion for that trip.

Remember - first thing’s first, your camera must fit your usage and clicking habits, so don’t forget to also look at some of those quick and easy hybrid cameras.
