How to Maintain the Efficiency of Self Dumping Hopper?

Posted by Rouramh on August 21st, 2015

It can be convenient to have self dumping hoppers in the workplace, especially if your job deals with handling glass, metal scraps, construction materials, and forgings. They are versatile pieces of equipment that can be used for a wide range of different applications that require a heavy-duty and durable vessel for safe and efficient materials handling. High-quality self-dumping hoppers are made of strong 12 gauge steel, and they have different thicknesses to suit various capacities. They may be manufactured to be durable in the long run, but they may wear down a little over time. Hence, they require proper cleaning and maintenance to prolong their service life. Check out these tips to help you maintain the efficiency of self-dumping hoppers:

  • Look for material cracks – Large pieces of concrete, hot ash, and coal can cause some level of damage to the sides and base of the self dumping hopper. Always be on the lookout for holes and cracks before and after using the hoppers for those types of materials. Holes may form due to certain materials, and the base could be damaged if it is not continuously welded. Hence, be sure to buy a high-quality self dumping hopper that has a continuously welded body to ensure a heavy-duty and strong base.
  • Always clean the hopper – If you intend to use a self dumping hopper for other applications, be sure to clean it first. Certain materials can leave residue and contaminate other materials, so it is best to clean the hoppers in between usage. Make sure that you leave no trace of the other material that has been placed in it. Otherwise, invest in more self dumping hoppers to save time and to prevent contamination or damage. This way, you can keep your workplace safer, and you can increase your productivity, too.

Remember to wear safety equipment, such as gloves and a face mask when you have to spray water to the self dumping hopper. This way, you can protect yourself when debris flies around. Glass, ash, concrete, and forgings are dangerous to handle with your bare hands.

  • Keep it dry – Continuous exposure to water and moisture could wear down the self dumping hopper, so be sure to drain any water from it, especially before you use it for other materials like coal and ash. After cleaning, wait for it to dry before you use it again.
  • Inspect the parts – There could be some damage or debris stuck to the other parts of the hopper, so be sure to check the wheels, continuous stop bar, secure latch, and the lid (if any). Be sure to verify if there is anything that is preventing the hopper from self-dumping.
