Originally, Japanese beds were comprised of tatami straw-mats that supported cotton pads or blankets. Simplicity, comfort, and the efficient use of space were the fundamental motivations that inspired the platform-bed. Progressive and Earth-friendly furniture companies today borrowed this original notion and modernized it both aesthetically and functionally to meet contemporary needs and desires, which resulted in a wide variety of platform-beds that stand the test of time.

The platform-bed is not a new invention; it would be more accurate to think of it as a developmental process, since the first platform-beds could easily be described as loft-beds. Loft-beds were elevated on top of four poles, so that the space beneath them could be used for storage or as workstation. In earlier times, platform-beds were rather uniform, but today they can be found in many different styles. However, the most common form of platform-bed is still influenced by Japanese standards. Traditionally, beds in Japan were flat and very close to the ground, just like platform-beds today. A lower bedframe provides more vertical space, allowing a bedroom to be more spacious, which is visually pleasing as well as psychologically beneficial.

Usually, the mattresses that accompany platform-beds are firmer than standard mattresses because they support a straighter posture while sleeping. Some platform-beds come with Japanese Tatami mats that are used to support the mattress and to keep it separated from the floor. Many modern styles exist today that are designed to match a western style of living. They can handle any kind of mattress, and usually accommodate most headboards or footboards.
