Pool Maintenance ? How To Keep Your Pool In Top Shape

Posted by browningpools on August 25th, 2015

Keeping a home pool clean and sparkling can be cumbersome, but not when you do maintenance on a regular basis. Not all pools are the same, which means they have different maintenance needs. However, they share many similar problems that can easily be addressed with care. Common problems like broken pumps and murky water can easily be taken care of on your own, but more serious maintenance may require the help of professionals. No matter the case, always consult your manufacturer manuals whenever fixing or using certain pool equipment. While a professional service is a necessity every once in a while, there are things you can do on your own to make sure that your investment stays in pristine condition for longer:

  • Skim your pool's surface for debris and check baskets for the same. Floating debris on the surface of your pool will sink eventually, making them even harder to remove. Skimming the water's surface by hand or using a long-stemmed skimmer will help you remove leaves, bugs, barks, and other unwanted items in the pool water. This will also help the efficiency of the pool's pumping and circulation system while reducing the amount of chlorine you will need to add to the pool. Cleaning out strainer baskets will also help increase the circulation in your pool.
  • Vacuum the bottom and brush tile walls. Ideally, pools should be vacuumed at least once a week to keep the water clear and ultimately reduce the amount of chemicals that you need to add. Depending on the pool surface you have, choose the appropriate type of cleaner that will help keep algae from forming and calcium deposits from building up so they won't cause further problems. The material of your pool wall usually dictates the kind of cleaning tools you need, so ask your builder for tips on keeping them clean.
  • Clean your filters. There are different types of pool filters used in commercial and home pools. These include cartridge filters, diatomaceous earth, and sand. Each requires unique maintenance procedures, but all require regular cleaning. Increase frequency of maintenance if you use your pool on a regular basis. Cleaning your filters will make the pool system more efficient, as it allows water to flow freely. An increase in your pressure gauge is a clear sign that you need to clean your filter.
  • Call up professional service. Regularly have your pool system serviced to ensure longevity and prevent damage and more costly maintenance procedures that can be avoided with regular servicing.
