Soccer Drills For Kids That Combine Fun With Learning

Soccer drills for kids teach players everything from the basics of ball control and the game to learning more advanced skills. Consider these drills that require each player to have a ball. By having a ball for each player on the team, kids have more fun, get more practice time and suffer less boredom during training.

Dribbling Driving School

This exercise is fun and effective at teaching team members ball control. Outline a practice area measuring approximately 20 feet x 20 feet. Explain to the kids that they are going to "drive" their balls around the field, rebounder fotboll but they must listen and follow your driving instructions to avoid a wreck. Demonstrate the techniques required to "stop," "slow," "speed up," and "turning right or left." Other commands include "pull back and go the other way" and "step around." When players hear the coach say "go," they must begin dribbling their ball. While traveling around the field, each player must keep the ball close to their feet and avoid running into other players. Change commands as desired. Stop the drill after two to three minutes and offer suggestions and praise. Repeat the drill and evaluation process.

Square Dribbling Drill

Using cones, tape or other materials to represent boundaries, create a square that measures 10 to 12 feet on each side. Position half of the team on one of the horizontal boundaries and the other half on one of the vertical boundary lines. When told to "go," the players each must dribble their ball to the opposite boundary line, stop, turn and return to the starting line. Players continue the drill for a designated amount of time. The exercise serves to build confidence in team members when sharing space with other players. Additionally, children learn to dribble with both feet, concentrate on the ball and remain focused on the goal of hitting the boundary line.

Confidence, Strength and Aggressive Play

Soccer drills for kids include learning aggressive skills. Establish a starting line and a finishing line spaced at around 15 feet apart. Instruct each child to stand with feet shoulder width apart and knees slightly bent. When told to "go," each pair must use their hips and shoulders to try to get their team member off balance. Step-up the drill by having the pairs move from one line to the other while pushing each other. Repeat the exercise with the players running. Finally, give each pair a ball. One player must travel from the start to the finish while preventing the other from kicking or stealing the ball. Successfully kicking the ball wins the opponent one point and stealing the ball wins two points. Switch positions and repeat the drill.

Short Scrimmages

Mark out field boundaries measuring 25 to 40 steps in width and 30 to 50 steps in length. Use cones or other markers to signify where the goal lies on each end of the field. Make this area about four steps wide.
