If your puppy needs to chew because he is teething, try a frozen washcloth. Dogs have a tendency to zone in on one particular thing until something else grabs their attention. With enough training, your dog should be able to pay more attention to your orders. Most dogs respond better to positive reinforcement rather than negative punishment. If you're trying to train your dog, reward him for good behavior and only scold him if absolutely necessary. Your dog will remember the reward for good behavior more distinctly than the punishment for bad behavior, making rewarding more effective. After your dog training session is completed, finish with a command that you know your dog already can do. This allows your dog's subconscious to remember that it has completed the days training, and can also help your animal to retain the information it has learned from the training session. It also will help maintain the routine. Many puppies like to use their mouths to play because that is how they played with their litter mates. This should be discouraged as soon as possible after your puppy comes home. It may be cute when a seven pound puppy pulls on your arm or shirt sleeve, but I assure you, it isn't as cute when a fifty pound dog does it. When a dog lives in a house that does not have any small children or older adults living in it, the owner should go out of their way to introduce their dog to those types of people. By introducing them in a controlled situation, one can train their dog how to act around those types of people if they are ever over at the home. Participating in a group class can be a very effective way to train your dog. Group classes are almost always less expensive than individual training sessions. They also offer your dog the opportunity to socialize with other pets. Look for a smaller group though, so that you still have plenty of one on one interaction with the trainer. Train your dog so that living together is fun for both you and your dog.
