Guinea Pig Care 101

Posted by Tony slack on May 12th, 2021

Are you considering adding a guinea pig to the family? These little critters make wonderful pets for many people, and they’re often a good “starter” pet for kids. Learn more about the basic care needs of guinea pigs as your pet clinic Wichita, KS tells you more below.

Cage

Your guinea pig will need a large cage, usually a wire-mesh cage, with a solid bottom to accommodate your new pet’s wood-shaving bedding material. (You’ll need to scoop this out and change it regularly.) There should be space for a hiding hut, toys, and a food and water area.

Diet

Your guinea pig will eat a diet of commercial pellet food, as well as a steady supply of timothy hay and fresh fruits and vegetables. Acceptable choices include carrots, zucchini, lettuce, apples (remove the seeds!), kiwi, orange slices, and cucumbers, among others.

Handling

Guinea pigs can sometimes be rather skittish, especially if they’re not used to humans. Be slow and deliberate with your movements around your pig; they’ll warm up to you over time! Many guinea pigs wind up enjoying the cuddle time.
