2022 Bentley Bentayga: Sharper Speed

The last few years have witnessed the numerous incursions of overseas brands in Britain, especially in vehicle industry. The domestic brands have been located in inferior position. Now it is time for British automakers to fight back into what used to be each other's sovereign territory. To prepare the anti-attack, lots of giants in vehicle industry have gave themselves a round of upgrade and overhaul. For example, Aston Martins have become more pliant and comfortable after the mid-circle improvement. Rolls-Royces have grown modestly more athletic and aggressive after the significant facelift. And Bentley is much more focusing on driving dynamics with the all-new Bentley Bentayga. The all-new Bentley Bentayga not only does add much speed indeed, but also  brings easier handling and more cosy driving experience to Bentley's big coupe.

In the previous time, we actually already have Speed versions of Bentley Bentayga, but the model then has just added horsepower, far from sharpening handling to a higher and improved degree. But now there will be a total different story for the new Bentley Bentayga. According to the company, the 2022 Bentley Bentayga is based on Continental GT W12. Although we know that Continental GT W12 is already good enough in the speed, the 2022 Bentley Bentayga is said to be quicker than the already rapid Continental GT W12. The new model is fitted to a twin-turbo 6.0-liter W-12 that makes 650 horsepower, a 24-hp increase than the former one, but it in fact produces the same torque peak of 664 pound-feet. In the test video revealed, Bentley says W12 spends 9.3 seconds to reach 60 mph from zero, while the Bentayga just need 3.1 seconds. That is to say, Bentley Bentayga shaves a tenth of a second from the W12’s zero-to-60-mph time. Top speed also gains improvement in spite of a relatively subtle margin, increasing from 207 mph to 208 mph. This point is hard to be noticed, but it works indeed.

Except the above mentioned changes, other changes are more remarkable and significant. In order to sharpen the emergency responses and improve high-speed stability, the 2022 Bentley Bentayga is the first model of Bentley family to get rear-wheel steering. Thanks to the rear-wheel steering, it gains a new electronically controlled limited-slip differential, which prevents effectively from making a one-tire fire made out of the summer rubber wrapping 22-inch wheels.

From the video, we can see that the rearward tilt of the car's all-wheel drive system is also more pronounced, and the Bentley Bentayga's electronic sentinel has been recalibrated. The new Sport mode is more attractive and the control pages are more stable. The new Bentley Bentayga we drove would have been limited in speed at Silverstone in the UK, but I think that was due to delays in certifying the car for road use in the UK. This is clearly a system issue and has nothing to do with the car itself. It was a limited experience in an atypical environment, but it did prove that unlike most Bentley's mods, the Bentley Bentayga is indeed better suited to driving on hard tracks.
