4 Driveway Paving Problems and What You Need to Know About Them

Posted by Prestige Patching on May 13th, 2021

Holes and cracks can appear on driveway paving over time. These are common signs of wear and tear. But when you see them, it’s a good idea to do a thorough inspection to see if they warrant an immediate Driveway Repair or if you need to completely replace your driveway.

Here are some common issues that might need driveway repair:

1. Line cracks

These linear cracks can be small, hairline cracks that appear on the paving and eventually widen. You might not notice the hairline cracks at first but they will eventually get bigger as they wear out and respond to the movements of the ground. One thing is for certain – these cracks will only get bigger if you don’t get driveway repair right away.

Why is it important to get a driveway repair for cracks? It is to prevent water from seeping into the inner portions of the paving. Water tends to break down the components of the driveway material and this can weaken its foundation.

Additionally, weeds can start growing from those cracks or dirt can accumulate there, leading to more damage.

Don’t just use crack fillers. They are not meant for long-term results. It’s best to hire professionals to do driveway repair.

2. Spider web cracks

These are cracks that go in different directions, hence the name. It closely resembles that of a spider web. It is similar to when glass cracks.

This is an indication that the driveway paving hasn’t been installed properly. It’s beyond saving because the problem is the structure itself. Additionally, if the paving is old and you have used sealers so many times in the past, this can happen.

The old and damaged paving needs to be removed. The aggregate layer should be compacted for a sturdy base before the new paving is installed.

3. Uneven, wavy areas

Are some parts of the paving depressed or indented as if there is a wave forming on it? This happens because of two things. First, it can be because heavy vehicles are going up your driveway. Second, the ground your driveway is sitting on could be loose.

Water can seep in the loose ground and this can be subjected to changing temperatures. In the winter, the ground can freeze and expand, which will cause the driveway to move.

4. Fading surface

It’s a result of exposure to the elements. The sun’s UV rays, rain, frost, and vehicle traffic can all affect the paving. In the case of asphalt paving, it’s important to fix this problem right away to prevent the surface from getting brittle.

When it comes to driveway repair, always go to professionals for help. Prestige Patching will check and diagnose the problem of your driveway and recommend the right solutions.
