Knee pain hits millions of people a year and is a common complaint among athletes as well as the common man. It could be pain that is the result of awkwardly sliding into 2nd base or the results of arthritis. The good news is there typically are treatments available for the problems. Following are some tips to consider when you're laid up in pain.

REST....BUT NOT TOO MUCH

While it seems like common sense to rest your knee if in pain, sometimes a person can over rest it. The person who rests too much as a method of treating knee pain runs the danger of weakening their muscles, which can, in turn, make the joint pain worse. If you're unsure how much activity is too much, touch base with a physical therapist or your general practitioner.

EXERCISE THE KNEE

While it's probably not what you want to hear, exercise can be good for aching joints, including the knee. Cardio exercise can make the muscles stronger and more flexible. Try simple walking, swimming, and elliptical machines to get started. It's also smart to use knee sleeves and braces as you start out, too.

ASSISTANCE

Don't be ashamed to use walking assistance when soldiering through an injury. Canes are an inexpensive aid to give you stability when walking. This is especially helpful when walking outside on uneven ground. Canes come in a variety of colors and patterns to give your walk some style when you're out and about.

SHOES MATTER

While you're probably not going around barefoot, not just any shoe will do as you heal from a knee injury or arthritis. While you don't have to go out and buy all new shoes to accommodate an injury, it is a good idea to invest in some cushioned insoles that will fit into your existing shoes. There are even special insoles one can purchase for those who suffer from osteoarthritis, so check with you physician to see if this is something you should pursue.

TALK TO A PROFESSIONAL

If this is the first time you've felt knee pain, definitely make an appointment to see a doctor. They can examine the injury and recommend a good course of action. Don't start any of the exercises mentioned until after you've seen a doctor.

Knee pain shouldn't last forever and with exercise, rest, elevation, ice and even heat, patients should be able to get around after very little downtime. By all means, stay in touch with your physician and follow their instructions to the tee.
