Subsistence Farming
Subsistence farming is the first type of farming. In this farming, farmers are practised to complete the consumption needs of the family. The production of this farming is not export or use for commercial purposes. Instead, subsistence farming yield is used for farmers and farmer’s family consumption.
In India, almost 82% of farmers practice subsistence farming. It is done with a low level of technology and household labour.
Farmers can reuse this product, and also, farmers can not sell and earn money through production.
This farming method is traditional and practised since ancient times. In this farming, the machinery or equipment don’t make use.
For this farming practice, farmers do not require any large areas as they can easily do it in less area of land.
This farming does not require any fertilizer or modern techniques.
Facilities such as electricity, irrigation and others are not available for this farming as subsistence farming depends on natural irrigation methods.
Types of Subsistence Farming
There are two types of subsistence farming being practised.
Intensive subsistence farming requires small land, low-cost tools, and more labour. Rice is the main crop in this farming, and other crops are wheat, maize, pulses, and oilseeds. This farming is widely practised in monsoon regions such as south, South East, East Asia.
Primitive Subsistence Farming includes two methods: Shifting Cultivation, and the second is Nomadic Herding. In shifting cultivation, farmers required thickly and heavy rainfall forested areas. In this farming method, crops like maize, yam, potatoes, and cassava are grown. In the Nomadic Herding method, semi-dry areas and dry areas such as central Asia and some areas of India such as Rajasthan and Jammu & Kashmir are required.
2. Commercial Farming
As per the name, this farming is only done for commercial purposes. The products of this farming sale in the markets to do business.
This practice is done in large areas and requires a high level of technology.
In this method, farmers used high-cost tools for reasonable productivity.
Types of Commercial Farming
There are three types of Commercial farming accessible:-
Commercial Grain Farming being practised for grains, and the winter season suitable for it. In this method, only a single crop grows at one time. North America, Europe, and Asia are the major regions of this farming.
Commercial Mixed Farming requires good rainfall and irrigation and is done to grow foods and fodder crops. This farming is done in Europe, the eastern USA, Argentina, southeast Australia, New Zealand and South Africa.
Commercial Plantation Farming requires a large amount of labour and large areas. In this farming, tea, coffee, cotton, rubber, banana, and sugarcane are grown. Hilly areas such as sub-Himalayan, Nilgiri and West Bengal are the major regions for it.
