Reverse osmosis water filtration systems were originally designed for use in large treatment facilities. They work by forcing water through an exceptionally fine membrane, or membrane block. This filter has two smaller stages, a stage where the water passes through the filter media and a second stage where it exits the filter. During this time, the contaminants are trapped in the media.

There are a number of advantages to this type of water filtering systems. The primary advantage is that they can trap chlorine and other chemicals in their narrow pores. While reverse osmosis water systems can remove many contaminants, they also tend to trap chemicals and minerals that are not really harmful. These include natural mineral ions, such as calcium and magnesium, as well as organic compounds, such as zinc and potassium. While the minerals are removed, the organic compounds are left in the water.

This water filtering system works by pushing the water through a semi-permeable membrane. In doing so, it pushes out all of the contaminant contaminants. As the water passes through the filters, it picks up the positive ionic charge of the mineral. As the water passes through the filter media, it releases the negative ions, which pull the impurities from the water. This process continues as the system continually passes through the membrane.

This is the basic design of the reverse osmosis filter. It's relatively easy to understand. The semi-permeable membrane is charged with a positive electrical charge, which is how the pump motor creates its power. The water is pushed through the semi-permeable membrane at a constant current, which is why there is no energy loss. The pump is designed in such a way that the only time it's working over a load is when the pump is actively pumping water.

This type of filtration is not completely effective in removing all contaminants, as many are trapped by the semi-permeable membrane. As water is forced through the system, some contaminants will be pushed out of the membrane, while some will remain in the water. This is why pure water has to pass through the same pressure and time that it did through the reverse osmosis step in the system. If the contaminant molecules were allowed to escape the membrane, the entire purification step would be useless. The flow of water and the pressure used to push it through the system have little or no effect on these trapped impurities.

Chlorine and lead can also be present in natural water sources, even if the supply is treated. In order for your reverse osmosis water filtration system to trap chlorine and other contaminants, a granular carbon filter must be used. However, not all contaminates are trapped by this filter. Particles like herbicides, pesticides, and other organic compounds can be dislodged by the pressure and flow of water, as well as by the semi-permeable membrane used in reverse osmosis systems.

Activated carbon filters with sub-micron particle filter membranes are the most effective at removing herbicides, pesticides, and other organic chemicals. When the system operates at full speed, it pushes water through amazingly fast, forcing all contaminants down the drain. However, some contaminants are larger than water, and as water passes through the device, the smaller particles become trapped by the semi-permeable membrane. They are eventually dislodged and flushed away into the drainage system or sewer. If you have a tank-mounted system, the semi-permeable membrane is located inside the tank, providing excellent protection from these types of contaminants.

If your home has a plumbing system, you should check your water pressure every few months for the sake of maintaining good water quality. Reverse osmosis systems work great for purifying water for a shower or kitchen sink, but do not work well for household drinking water. For that reason, you may want to consider a whole house reverse osmosis system with a complete sub-micron filtration system. You'll get better water quality and enjoy better health from its use. An RO system with an activated carbon filter is also the best choice for ensuring that you're drinking safe, naturally sourced water.
