What should you do if your retainer doesn’t fit you anymore?

After you complete your orthodontic treatment, your Van Wyck orthodontist wills definitely handover a pair of retainers to keep your teeth in their place. Retainers are important because the teeth have a tendency to shift to their previous positions. To avoid this, wearing retainers is compulsory. However, over a period of time there is a possibility that your retainer might not fit. This is a common situation and you must not panic. Take an appointment with your Van Wyck orthodontist and you will be sorted. Your specialist will either adjust your retainer or give you a new one to fit in your mouth again.
The retainers might also not fit if you have not worn them for a long time and your teeth have already started shifting. In this case, your orthodontist will suggest a second round of orthodontic care to re-align your teeth. This may involve similar expenses as you had during the first round of orthodontic treatment. To avoid spending the second time on the same treatments, it is important to wear your retainer properly and as prescribed by your orthodontist.

How to make your retainer fit again?

If you aren’t comfortable to put your retainers in the mouth again, you should not force it. If you force, you can either damage the retainer or your teeth. If the retainer is not fitting your mouth, either the retainer has become misshapen or your teeth have shifted out of alignment. The first thing your should do after finding this out is booking an appointment with your orthodontist and see what can be done next. During the visit, your teeth and retainer will be examined properly to identify the issue.
If you chose Hawley retainer earlier, your orthodontist will just adjust the retainer so that it fits you again comfortably. If you had clear plastic retainers, you will be given a new set of retainers to fit the current curvature of your mouth.
How do you know that the retainers do not fit anymore?

We already stated that you must never force your retainers in the mouth. In case of clear plastic retainers, it is easier to find out the they are not fitting your teeth anymore. These retainers are custom fit and still if they do not fit, only your orthodontist can make the adjustments and make sure that they fit your mouth again.

The clear plastic aligners are easily affected by heat. In case you left your retainers in the kitchen or left open in the sunlight, there are chances that your retainers have distorted and thus, they are not fitting your mouth anymore. When this happens, you will need a new pair of retainers from your orthodontist. Talk to your orthodontist and get a new set of retainers today.
Van Wyck orthodontics have everything to erect your smile. Take a step today.
