Yellow Cichlids The Yellow Cichlids are originally from the Nkata Bay of Lake Malawi, home of the African Cichlid. They are small Mbuna (rock dwelling) and will eventually gain a length of approximately 8 inches. They are usually found in their Golden Stage, meaning bright yellow with black dorsal fin. The young are quite drab in color. Uncommon to most cichlids, both male and female are brightly colored, the male even brighter at breeding time. Most females of the cichlid family are not pretty at all, but the yellows are very beautiful. When preparing an aquarium for these friend, be sure to provide plenty of rocks and caves. This is what they are used to and this is where they live the best. Plants can be added also, providing oxygenation as well as hiding places. The diet of the yellow cichlid in the aquarium should consist of high protein live, fresh and flake foods. Brine shrimp and bloodworms can be added for treats, as well as zucchini, shelled peas, spinach and lettuce. They are very susceptible to Malawi Bloat, therefore, in order to keep them healthy, perfect water conditions and a high protein diet must be maintained. 74 - 84 degrees Fahrenheit, with a DH of 18 - 20 and PH of 7 - 8 is perfect. Keeping these conditions and not allowing them to be overfed and overstocked, they will live for approximately 10 years. It is recommended to keep 1 male to every 3 - 6 females, providing less stress on the females. The yellows are considered non territorial, however, if overcrowding occurs, rival males will become much more aggressive. Also, during breeding activities it is advised that once the eggs are fertilized and taken back into the females' mouth, hence, mouthbrooders, she be kept from the rest of the pack until the young fry is ready to live on their own. This is a beautiful species, easy to maintain and breed, and is a wonderful addition to most any aquarium. Jobs Malawi
