Electric Yellow Cichlid From Lake Malawi The Electric Yellow Cichlid is a freshwater fish found in the rocky banks and vegetated areas of Lake Malawi. Adults Electric Yellows grow to be up to 6 inches. These fish are easily recognized by their bold yellow coloring and just a touch of black on their fins. Males may be distinguished from the female by their slightly larger size and characteristic black marking near the eye. The Yellow Cichlid has a tendency to become quite aggressive during breeding periods but is otherwise moderately tempered. It is not a particularly fussy eater and will make a meal of anything from store bought fish food to spinach. Perhaps the most important aspect of Electric Cichlid care is the appropriate maintenance of its tank environment. Dirty or stagnant water can cause fading of the vibrant coloring, so water should be cleaned and filtered regularly. Ideal tank temperatures for the Electric Yellow Cichlid range between 74F and 84F. It is also important to create caves and hiding spots for your Electric Yellow Cichlid by piling rocks into the bottom of the tank. This is particularly critical during the time your fish are spawning. As the fish are mouth breeders, they will keep the young in their mouths until it is time to hatch. Females must be put in a separate recovery tank after the young hatch in order to recover from the ordeal of not eating and to regain strength. Flake food or baby brine shrimp may be fed to the young once they have finished the yolk. Job Vacancies Malawi
