My Experience with Duolingo and How to Create Your App

Posted by Patric Carnival on May 24th, 2021

Just recently, I completed a French language using the Duolingo application. And it was a fantastic experience, it was beneficial, and I learned a lot.

With the help of this application, I significantly progressed, learned basic grammatical structures and over two thousand words. And it definitely wasn’t boring, especially with those excellent short funny, original dialogues.

I was so amazed at the quality of the course that I started googling on how to make an app like Duolingo. Surprisingly, this proved to be not rocket science. Of course, projects like Duolingo are a joint effort of the team, but the application development process is pretty routine. The major challenge for a competitor would be to differentiate in a way and find people able to generate good quality content.

Gamification is also the key to success. It is very involving to compete with other virtual learners and also the interactivity of the whole learning process. Gamification elements significantly contribute to the success of learning and enthusiasm of learners.

Step-by-step development of the app is ok. Duolingo grew over the years up to 40 language courses including very rare languages like Sanskrit.

You can also start with some MVP (minimal viable product), launch it, get the first users, get their feedback and then evolve.

The language app monetization is a topic for a separate article. However, in a couple of words, the most obvious ways are a free version with advertisements, paid subscriptions (one-time or monthly, yearly) with a free trial period. Please, stay tuned!
