Trends in the market include:
Biodegradable And Reusable Surgical Masks-
Surgical masks manufacturing companies are increasingly investing to make surgical masks biodegradable and reduce plastic pollution. With heavy use of surgical masks globally due to the Covid-19 pandemic, companies and consumers are realizing the importance of biodegradable and reusable masks. Companies such as Cambridge and Aniwon have already invested in biodegradable and reusable surgical masks to mitigate pollution concerns and create reusable options for consumers.  Other companies such as AirX have launched a biodegradable face mask made from Vietnamese coffee. The mask provides two layers of protection. The first layer is woven from coffee yarn and the second layer has a biodegradable filter on the inside which is developed by silver nanotechnology and coffee. The mask is washable and reusable and the filter has to be replaced after 30 days. The company is currently developing a mask with the N-95 feature and the product is expected to be launched soon according to the company’s spokesperson.

Tie-ups Between Governments And Mask Manufacturing Companies-
Mask manufacturers are increasingly entering into agreements with governments for mutual benefits. To mitigate the supply chain issues and global shortage of surgical masks and N-95 respirators, governments are increasingly forming tie-ups with local manufacturers and banning the export of these masks to other countries. In April 2020, the government of Gujarat, a state in India, has roped state-based private companies to manufacture N95 masks exclusively to be sold to the government. The US Department of Defense has signed contracts worth 3 million with companies such as 3M, Honeywell and Owens & Minor for N-95 respirator production.  In China, the epicenter of the global pandemic, the government encouraged companies to boost manufacturing capacity for personal protective (PPE) equipment, including masks to meet domestic and foreign demand. The Chinese government has encouraged all manufacturers even including toy and electronics manufacturers to boost manufacturing capacity for PPE. These manufacturers are aided by government-backed loans and reduced registration requirements.
