Glycine Has Recently Become One Of The Main Nutrients In Alternative Medicine

Glycine has recently become one of the main nutrients in alternative medicine, especially in treating Alzheimer's disease, where it is believed to work in two different ways. Firstly, it can slow down the progression of the disease by improving the cholinesterase enzyme in the brain that processes the amino acid, preventing further amassing of the toxin. Secondly, glycine also acts as a receptor for the neurotransmitter acetylcholine, preventing the release of the poison from the nerve endings of the brain. These applications make use of glycine in applications aimed at improving mental functions and reducing physical and mental stress caused by daily activities.

Glycine deficiency has been shown to be responsible for some cases of mental retardation in children. Some studies have even shown a deficiency of glycine to be a cause of the disorders such as autism, diabetes, epilepsy, blindness, and Parkinson's disease in humans. Glycine deficiency was discovered in humans by a research team led by James Parkinson, a British physician. Parkinson had worked with a patient who was unresponsive to insulin, and he noted a remarkable improvement in his patients after he started treating the deficiency of glycine. Since then, there have been many studies done on glycine and its effects on the body.

A variety of Glycine supplements can be used to supplement the diet, although they should never be used as a primary source of nourishment. Supplements containing large amounts of Glycine can cause an imbalance in your body, causing an accumulation of toxins. This can result in lethargy, bloating, excessive urination, and loss of energy.
